This workshop is about

So... you bought a “good” camera. You know—the one with all the fancy buttons you’ve been too scared to touch. It’s been sitting there, judging you from the shelf, whispering, “Use me properly…”

Well, this is your moment.

In this small group, hands-on workshop, I’ll help you break up with Auto mode and start using your camera like the creative genius you secretly are.

You’ll learn how to turn those random holiday shots into intentional, stunning, scroll-stopping images using your camera’s Semi-Auto and Manual modes (yes, you’ll finally know what those mean).

We’ll cover the good stuff—like lighting, composition, focus, exposure, colour, gear, and how to make your photos feel more “wow” than “meh.”

🚫 Important: If your camera doesn’t have manual controls (or if it's your phone), this workshop isn’t the right fit. This is for the big kids with the big cameras :-)

What You'll Actually Get Good At

By the end of this workshop, you’ll:

Finally know what all those buttons and menus do
Say goodbye to Auto mode and hello to actually using that camera you bought.

Make sense of all those “scary” camera terms
Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, Depth of Field, Rule of Thirds… You’ll not only understand them—you’ll use them.

Crack the code of exposure—without a headache
No science degree needed. Just simple, practical ways to take well-lit, dramatic or artistic photos every time.

Focus like a pro
Learn how to get those crisp, sharp shots—on purpose, not by accident.

Master light, composition & what makes a photo pop
Turn “meh” shots into scroll-stoppers.

Create images worth showing off
Yes, your friends will ask, “Did you really take that?”

Start calling yourself a photographer—with confidence
Because let’s be honest: Everyone’s a photographer… until Manual.

This Workshop is For YOU if

You’ve got a 'good' camera... collecting dust
It looked so shiny and promising—but now it just sits there, silently judging you.

Your camera lives in Auto mode
Because every time you look at the buttons, your brain says, “Aagh.”

You’re still using your phone because it’s easier
Even though deep down you know your camera could do so much more (if only you knew how).

You’re a beginner—or somewhere in the “I sort of get it” zone
This workshop is made for real people, not tech wizards. No pressure, no jargon, just simple explanations and learning by doing.

You spent real money on that camera and it’s doing... not much
Let’s change that, shall we?

You own a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls
And you’re ready to finally unlock all its potential—and yours.

If you’re nodding along (or laughing nervously), this is your sign.
Let’s dust off that camera and make some magic together. I'd love to help you.  You in?

Workshop Investment

$355 per person

Small group hands-on learning so book early (usually 6 people except Dark Sky Astro, which is smaller usually 4)

About your Tutor

Hey there! I’m Celia Walmsley

Photographer, tutor, camera whisperer—and your guide to finally figuring out how to use that 'good' camera of yours.

I’m based in the stunning landscapes of Central Otago and the creative buzz of Wellington, and I’ve been hooked on photography for over 30 years (yep, I started back in the film-and-darkroom days!).

For the past 12+ years, I’ve run my business, Stagebox Photography, working full-time as a professional photographer—think weddings, portraits, personal branding, ballet and dance.

When I’m not capturing movement and moments, you’ll find me out chasing golden light, dramatic landscapes, and starry skies.

I also have a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and a Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, so yes—teaching is my jam too.

I love helping people go from camera-confused to confident photographers. Whether you’ve just unboxed your DSLR/Mirrorless camera or you’ve had it a while and still feel like you’re guessing—this workshop is for you.

We’ll ditch the jargon, keep it fun, and help you start making images you’re genuinely proud of.

Let’s get that camera working for you—not against you.

Thoroughly enjoyed my one on one sessions with Celia. I learned so much both about my camera and portrait photography.

I would thoroughly recommend Celia’s courses she is a great teacher and generously shares her extensive knowledge .📸
